Trek for Rights

By Marnie Umbers

Why I'm fundraising for women and girls in crisis

There are 614 million women and girls living in conflict affected areas today.
From Palestine to Ukraine, Haiti, Sudan, and Afghanistan, their numbers are going up, as geopolitical conflicts, climate change, health and food crises intensify.

I'm taking part in Trek for Rights 2025 and raising vital funds to help support the efforts of UN Women in partnership with local women’s organisations to provide critical services, hope and a lifeline to women and girls in war-torn countries and communities affected by natural disasters.

Kerry Camino: complete

Wednesday 19th Jun
This month I trekked 60km across County Kerry in Ireland, from Tralee to Dingle - The Kerry Camino.

The trek averaged 20km each day over three days and can I tell you, it was one of the most challenging, but more rewarding things I've ever done.

It was the first multi-day trek I've undertaken and it's taught me that I'll need to add some multi-day hikes to our training schedule for New Zealand, but also sustained hill ascents and descents, and lots of stairs!

An old knee injury niggled as I began to tire around the 15km mark on the first day, after traversing the side of a mountain in the pouring rain with very uneven terrain. I'll be working over the coming months to right the knee and strengthen my quads and calves.

The most important learning from this latest adventure was that I can do hard things! Day three was especially trying and I was very close to throwing in the towel after lunch. I was feeling awful (did I mention I had some form of gastro in the 48 hours leading into the trek?) my legs were just about done, my knee was constantly reminding me of its existence and my head was starting to feel all sorts of not ok and definitely dehydrated. I took my time, stripped off some layers to try to regulate my body temperature, got more electrolytes into my system, and over the coming hour I started to come good.

I can't wait to trek NZ in support of UN Women Australia and thank those who have already shown their support for the upcoming adventure! Your donation (however great or small) is very much appreciated as we work towards our Trekfetti team goal of $6000.

Thank You
